Bad luck Arminia! Bundesliga team flies out of the DFB Cup

Favourite Union Berlin wins 2-0 at Bielefeld

Bundesliga relegated Arminia Bielefeld has missed the round of 16 in the DFB Cup. The second division team lost to 1. FC Union Berlin 0:2 (0:1) on Tuesday evening and was eliminated.

In front of 7,388 spectators in the sold-out Bielefelder Alm, Kevin Behrens (21st minute) and Sheraldo Becker (69th) scored the goals for the guests from the capital. The Berliners, who had reached the semi-finals in the previous year, thus extended their record to 15 games without defeat in all competitions.

The hosts started bravely and had the first chance of the game through Janni Serra (4th). Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow initially fended off Serra's header strongly, but the ball landed at the feet of Bryan Lasme, who failed to convert from close range. Shortly afterwards, Rönnow also made a strong save against a shot from Masaya Okugawa (10th) and thus kept his team in the game.

On the other side, the guests gradually took control of the game and deservedly took the lead. After a mistake by Arminia goalkeeper Martin Fraisl, Behrens slotted the ball into the empty net from close range. The second division team tried to fight back, but rarely managed to pose a threat to the Union goal. Only Serra managed to get a header on target shortly before the break, but Rönnow was on hand again (44th).

After the change of sides, the game initially calmed down a little. However, Union remained the more dangerous team and had good chances through Becker (56th) and Jordan Siebatcheu (62nd) to extend their lead. It was not until the 69th minute that the Berliners managed to do so. After a precise cross from Niko Gießelmann, Becker headed the ball into the Bielefeld goal from close range.

In the last 20 minutes, Arminia tried to turn the game around, but the Berliners defended cleverly and did not allow any more chances. In the end, Union deservedly reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup, while Bielefeld's cup dream came to an end.
