Bayern Munich's Harry Kane left stunned by Eric Dier's shock resignation

England international Eric Dier has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect, leaving Bayern Munich's Harry Kane in a state of disbelief.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender made the surprise announcement on his social media channels on Thursday, stating that he had made the "difficult decision" to step away from the Three Lions set-up.

Dier's decision comes as a major blow to England manager Gareth Southgate, who has relied heavily on the 29-year-old in recent years. Dier has been a regular in the England team since making his debut in 2015, and has won 45 caps for his country.

The defender's decision to retire has left Kane, who is England's captain, shocked and disappointed.

"I'm gutted for Eric," Kane said. "He's a great player and a great guy. I've played with him for many years now and I know how much he loves playing for England. It's a shame that he's decided to retire, but I respect his decision."

Dier's retirement is the latest in a series of high-profile departures from the England team in recent months. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham have all retired from international football in the past year.

Southgate is now facing a major rebuilding job ahead of the 2024 European Championships.

"It's a blow to lose a player of Eric's quality," Southgate said. "But I understand his decision. He's had a lot of injuries in recent years and I think he feels that he can't give 100% to the England team anymore."

Southgate added: "I want to thank Eric for everything he has done for England. He's been a great servant to the team and I wish him all the best for the future."
