DFB-Pokal: Bayern gewinnt 4:0 bei Mainz 05
Bayern Munich advanced to the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal with a convincing 4-0 victory over Mainz 05 on Wednesday.
The Bavarians were in control from the start and took the lead in the 17th minute through Kingsley Coman. Thomas Müller doubled the advantage just before the break, and Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané added further goals in the second half to seal the win.
Bayern's dominance in the DFB-Pokal continues
Bayern has now won the DFB-Pokal 20 times, more than any other club. They are also the defending champions, having beaten RB Leipzig in last season's final.
Mainz 05, on the other hand, has never won the DFB-Pokal. Their best result was reaching the final in 2009, where they lost to Werder Bremen.
Coman and Müller lead the way for Bayern
Kingsley Coman was Bayern's standout performer on the night. The French winger scored the opening goal and was a constant threat to the Mainz defense. He has now scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, his best-ever tally for Bayern.
Thomas Müller was also impressive. The German forward scored Bayern's second goal and was involved in several other chances. He is now Bayern's all-time leading scorer in the DFB-Pokal, with 53 goals.
Mainz 05 offered little resistance
Mainz 05 offered little resistance to Bayern's dominance. The hosts had just one shot on target in the entire match, and they were never really in the game.
Mainz 05 has now lost its last five matches in all competitions. They are currently 11th in the Bundesliga, and they are in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.
Bayern will face Freiburg in the semi-finals
Bayern will face Freiburg in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Freiburg beat Bochum 3-1 on Tuesday to reach the last four.
The semi-finals will be played on April 19th and 20th. The final will be played on May 27th in Berlin.
