Hessen: Darmstadt 98 rings Dresden in wild cup fight
Third division soccer team Darmstadt 98 caused a sensation in the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening with a 2-1 (1-0) win over second division club Dynamo Dresden.
In front of a crowd of 16,400 at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor, the Lilies celebrated their first cup win since March 2020 and thus reached the second round of the competition.
The third division team took an early lead: Emir Karic scored the 1-0 lead for Darmstadt in the 10th minute. The Saxons increased the pressure in the second half and came to a deserved equalizer through Christoph Daferner in the 65th minute.
But the joy didn't last long: only three minutes later, Luca Pfeiffer scored the winning goal for Darmstadt with a header. In the end, Darmstadt deserved to win due to their efficiency in front of goal and their strong fighting performance.
For Dresden, it was a disappointing end to the DFB Cup adventure. The Saxons had previously thrown Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg out of the competition in the first round. Darmstadt, on the other hand, can now look forward to the second round draw, which will take place on Sunday, October 24th.
In the other DFB Cup matches on Tuesday evening, there were also surprises: Regional league club Rot-Weiss Essen defeated Bundesliga relegated Arminia Bielefeld 3-2 on penalties. Fourth division club VfB Oldenburg beat Erstligist Hertha BSC 2-1. Kickers Offenbach (Regionalliga Südwest) won 4-2 on penalties against Karlsruher SC (2nd Bundesliga) and 1. FC Saarbrücken (3rd division) defeated VfL Osnabrück (3rd division) 3-2.
